Trial results for a study evaluating hypertension management in patients living with HIV were posted on ClinicalTrials.gov on 2025-10-31, involving 830 participants.

Background

Patients living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are at an increased risk for various comorbidities, including hypertension. Effective management of hypertension is crucial for reducing cardiovascular disease risk and improving overall health outcomes in this population. Integrating hypertension care into existing HIV treatment programs, particularly in resource-limited settings such as primary health centers in Lagos, Nigeria, presents both opportunities and challenges. This study aimed to evaluate a tailored practice facilitation strategy to enhance the integration of hypertension control within HIV care.

Trial design

This study, designated as Phase NA, enrolled 830 participants to investigate the integration of care for Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Hypertension. The trial evaluated a tailored-practice facilitation (PF) strategy for integrating a task strengthening strategy for hypertension control (TASSH) for patients living with HIV within primary health centers. The intervention aimed to compare outcomes between a group receiving practice facilitation and a self-directed group without practice facilitation.

Key results

The trial reported key measurements related to the change in systolic blood pressure:

What this means

The posted results indicate that a practice facilitation strategy, when integrated into HIV care, led to a greater mean reduction in systolic blood pressure compared to a self-directed approach. Specifically, the practice facilitation group achieved a mean reduction of -15.1 mmHg, which was 2.3 mmHg more than the self-directed group's -12.8 mmHg reduction. This suggests that structured support through practice facilitation could be a beneficial approach for improving hypertension management outcomes for patients living with HIV, particularly within primary health centers in regions like Nigeria.
