Trial results for a study comparing the Sight Sciences VISCO™360 Viscosurgical System to Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) in open-angle glaucoma were posted on ClinicalTrials.gov on 2025-09-24. The study, which was terminated, showed that VISCO360 reduced mean diurnal intraocular pressure (IOP) by 5.2 mm Hg at 12 months.

Background

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to abnormally high intraocular pressure (IOP). Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form, where the drainage angle of the eye remains open, but fluid drains too slowly. Reducing IOP is the primary treatment strategy to prevent vision loss. Current treatments range from eye drops to laser procedures and surgery. The Sight Sciences VISCO™360 Viscosurgical System is an ab interno canaloplasty surgery, while Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a non-invasive laser procedure, both aiming to improve aqueous humor outflow and lower IOP.

Trial design

This terminated study enrolled 29 participants with Open-Angle Glaucoma. The trial aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Sight Sciences VISCO™360 Viscosurgical System in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) in adult, pseudophakic subjects. The intervention arm involved VISCO™360 ab interno canaloplasty surgery, which was compared against Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT).

Key results

The key measurements reported at 12 months include:

What this means

The results suggest that the Sight Sciences VISCO™360 Viscosurgical System may offer a greater reduction in mean diurnal IOP compared to Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) at 12 months, based on the observed mean changes of -5.2 mm Hg versus -3.6 mm Hg. Additionally, a higher proportion of subjects in the VISCO360 group (2 Participants) achieved a 20% or greater reduction in IOP compared to the SLT group (1 Participant). These findings provide preliminary insights into the comparative effectiveness of these two approaches for managing intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma, though the study was terminated and involved a small number of participants.
