Trial results for a study investigating an in-home technology system for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's Disease, other dementias, or mild cognitive impairment were posted on ClinicalTrials.gov on 2025-09-17, with 6 participants enrolled.
Background
Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, and mild cognitive impairment place significant demands on spousal and familial caregivers. These caregivers often experience increased anxiety, burden, and loneliness. There is a recognized need for supportive technologies designed to alleviate these challenges, particularly within specific cultural and linguistic contexts, such as Spanish language homes. This study aimed to develop and evaluate such an in-home supportive technology.
Trial design
This completed study, designated as Phase NA, enrolled 6 participants. The trial focused on individuals with Dementia, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Alzheimer Disease, specifically evaluating an in-home supportive technology designed for their caregivers in Spanish language homes. The intervention involved an In-Home Technology System, with the aim to alleviate anxiety, burden, and loneliness in caregivers.
Key results
The trial reported several key measurements assessing caregiver well-being at 3 and 6 months for the In-Home Technology System group:
- 3 Months Assessment for Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D): A mean score of 32.33 (Standard Deviation 11.37 units on a scale) was observed.
- 6 Months Assessment for Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D): A mean score of 29.5 (Standard Deviation 21.92 units on a scale) was observed.
- 3 Months Assessment for Zarit Burden Interview-Short Form: A mean score of 25.67 (Standard Deviation 2.98 units on a scale) was observed.
- 6 Months Assessment for Zarit Burden Interview-Short Form: A mean score of 26.5 (Standard Deviation 9.19 units on a scale) was observed.
- 3 Months Assessment for Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI): A mean score of 13.67 (Standard Deviation 11.50 units on a scale) was observed.
- 6 Months Assessment for Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI): A mean score of 14 (Standard Deviation 5.66 units on a scale) was observed.
- 3 Months Assessment for Satisfaction With Life Scale: A mean score of 14.33 (Standard Deviation 8.14 units on a scale) was observed.
- 6 Months Assessment for Satisfaction With Life Scale: A mean score of 14.5 (Standard Deviation 13.44 units on a scale) was observed.
What this means
The posted results provide initial measurements regarding the impact of an in-home technology system on caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, or mild cognitive impairment in Spanish language homes. The data offers specific mean scores and standard deviations for depression, caregiver burden, anxiety, and life satisfaction at 3 and 6 months. Given the small enrollment of 6 participants, these findings represent preliminary observations and do not include comparative analyses or statistical significance. They contribute to understanding the initial performance of the technology in addressing caregiver well-being.
